Malady

Words: Zed • Posted pre-2010

As the City Of Caterpillar became a ghost town the kids fastened their seatbelts and set their cruise control to "NEXT BAND OMGZ". So now population zero has increased due to the spawning of Malady, which features one of the guitarists and bassist from City Of Caterpillar. Saddle up cowboys, because from the dead carcass comes Malady!

(interview conducted through a collaboration of band members Jonathon, Johnny and Jeff)

ScenePointBlank: What does Malady mean and how do you pronounce it?

Malady: Malady just means some kind of disorder or more commonly a disease. You say it like melody, but with aaah's.

ScenePointBlank: How long have you been a band for? How did you all go about meeting?

Malady: We've been playing together as Malady since February but we all grew up together and have been playing music with one another in different combinations since 1994.

ScenePointBlank: You've made one song available online, did you just record that or more? What are the other songs like in comparison to 'Tongue Like A Serpent'?

Malady: That song is from our record coming out in September on level-plane. The record flows man, the songs are rock songs and thats what we were going for.

ScenePointBlank: How have your first shows gone so far?

Malady: The shows have been killer, we are having a great time playing together.

ScenePointBlank: What would you say your main influences are? When describing your band to a distant relative, what do you say?

Malady: To be honest, our biggest influences are us and our friends, I think we are always learning things from and inspiring eachother. I don't know my distant relatives, but if I were to meet them I'd say we are a rock band or maybe even a hard rock band, I guess I would try to get a good feel for this relative and then make the decision.

ScenePointBlank: How did you get hooked up with Level-Plane?

Malady: We've been friends with Greg for a long time...he put out records for some of our previous bands. He is an excellent person to have on our side.

ScenePointBlank: What do you wish to accomplish with Malady?

Malady: In Bogus Journey, when the Wild Stallions played that shitty Kiss song and it was televised across the world uniting all people and nations through the power of rock...something along those lines.

ScenePointBlank: Lyrically, what are the main messages in your songs? If there are no main messages, what are you trying to do with the lyrics?

Malady: These songs are about life. If there is a message it's that life is ugly, but you have to deal with it.

ScenePointBlank: Any bands in particular you'd like to play with?

Malady: The Beatles

ScenePointBlank: I don't mean this in a negative way, but from the one song I've heard Malady sounds much more accessible than City Of Caterpillar/Pg.99, why is this?

Malady: We are a different band, we've cut the shit and started the pit. We decided to trim the fat.

ScenePointBlank: Do you see being labeled as an ex- band as a good thing or a bad thing?

Malady: It's good and bad. more people are interested than if we didn't have that ex- thing going, but some people expect ex- bands to sound just like the old bands and are dissapointed when they realize they are doing new things.

ScenePointBlank: How is the scene out in VA?

Malady: VA is a big state and there are lots of scenes happening. We are only really familiar with a couple of those and they have always been cool, always a lot of change, youth, and energy.

ScenePointBlank: How do you feel the internet has impacted underground rock music?

Malady: It's juiced it up. It's the information super highway. It's great. The internet brings the underground to the common dude. And no one has to buy records anymore. Hauling those things around from show to show was a pain anyway.

ScenePointBlank: What have you been listening to lately?

Malady: Blonde Redhead and Malady.

ScenePointBlank: Finally, any last words?

Malady: Ok, this is what I want to say. All right, this is how I see it. Beautiful, intelligent girl from Paraguay. By chance happens to be working at a roadside motel in the middle of nowhere. Lost and confused, totally lost, incredibly unhappy person accidentally wanders in off the highway, and they meet, and they fall in love, and it's perfect. I mean it is perfect. And I can only hope that she feels a tenth of the way that I feel. I mean Inez, when we had sex this afternoon, it was, it was fun, you know?

Malady
Level Plane (2004)

This may seem like an overstatement or an overdramatic reaction to the task of reviewing a record, but honestly, reviewing Malady's self-titled record is probably one of the hardest things I will ever do. This band is, to say the least, sensational. Comprised of some of Virginia's finest dirty carefree musicians, Malady cranks out some of the catchiest, yet difficult-to-put-into-words … Read more
