SPB Year In Review 20091. Faith No More

This being number one does not surprise those that know me. I seriously debated the cost of flying to Europe just to see Faith No More's return show. Thankfully I waited and in a few more months I can once again see them in the United States. Angel Dust and King for a Day? Fool for a Lifetime are my two favorite albums ever. I am excited at the prospect of seeing them play once again.

2. Jawbox

Jawbox is a band that I never saw perform outside of music videos and bootleg videos on various websites. 2009 saw the band reunite to play a television show. Even if I hate Jimmy Fallon, the fact that he got them to play four songs together is fucking awesome. Now if someone can get Fugazi or Black Flag to play again?

3. Small Brown Bike

The Midwest punk sound has become increasingly more and more popular over the past five years. So its only fitting that Small Brown Bike, one of the best bands of the style, would make their return in 2009. The group has already released a two-song 7" and with plans for a new full-length in 2010, it's already on my short list of most anticipated albums.

4. Cave In

Rumors began in late 2008 but the actual return of Cave In was a much talked about story in 2009. Sure, there were several more high profile bands returning, but this was the first one to churn out new material. The band's Planets of Old EP was a condensed, focused return effort. With more new songs already penned I early anticipate a LP in 2010.

5. Sunny Day Real Estate

There were a lot of widely publicized reunions throughout the year. Sunny Day Real Estate's return had long been discussed and of the reunions it was probably the least shocking. That didn't make it any less fulfilling for them to once again play shows, and with the group writing new material there are hopes for a new LP in the near future.

Honorable Mention: Godflesh will be playing Hellfest in France in the Summer of 2010. So while they aren't "reunited" just yet, it's hard to not include this. I've got my fingers crossed for a U.S. performance.
