Banner Pilot

(Nate Gangelhoff)

What are your top five albums that were released in 2009? (In order 1-5)

  1. Dear Landlord - Dream Homes

  2. Little Lungs - Hoist Me Up!

  3. Tegan and Sara - Sainthood

  4. House Boat - The Delaware Octopus

  5. Dead to Me - African Elephants

What band did you discover in 2009 (can be a brand new band or an older band) that had an impact on your life? What made them significant?

Impact on my life is probably a little strong, but I really dug the record by this band called Little Lungs. It has some really impressive/technical music, but it's done in a catchy way. Usually when someone has a weird time signature or difficult-to-play part, I can recognize that what they're doing is impressive, but it doesn't make for good music. I might be interested in hearing it, once, for the novelty of it. But it's sort of like a really boring person with an impressive vocabulary. You know? But Little Lungs have songs that are catchy enough to get stuck in your head, despite containing some fairly technical musicianship. Quite the feat!

How will you remember 2009? (In terms of music)

The first year in 15 years we did not have Chinese Democracy to look forward to.

2009 was a huge year for reunions. What reunion excited you the most? What band that has not reunited would you love to see play/record most in 2010?

I'm drawing a blank. I can't think of anyone outside of Blink 182. I think reunions tend to be bad ideas. Usually the new recorded output is sub par and kind of fucks with the band's legacy. I don't know. I guess I'd like to see Latterman get back together for another album. I bet they'd come up with a record just as good if not better than their old stuff.

What can we look forward to from you in 2010?

I'll be recording albums with Off With Their Heads and The Gateway District early in the year, and then doing SXSW and a European tour with Banner Pilot. All of that should be really, really fun! After that, hopefully write a new Banner Pilot album; we're already kicking some ideas around.

What three records are you looking forward to most in 2010?

Los Campesinos - Romance is Boring, Against Me - White Crosses, Ted Leo - The Brutalist Bricks
