Aidan Baker (Nadja)

SPB: Other than music, what other art forms interest you?

Baker: I would say all other art forms interest me, but I guess that's probably a vaguer answer than you would like...So I guess I'd say literature is my second passion after music, both reading and writing. I grew up in a family that played music and read books, so both art forms were an important part of my upbringing but in my early twenties I was much more seriously pursuing a career as a writer than as a musician. I didn't especially have a lot of success in the literary world, although I have published a few books of poetry. I still try to write when I can, but music has certainly taken precedence in my artistic endeavours. Some of my favourite writers: Angela Carter, Richard Brautigan, Shelley Jackson, Steve Erickson, Iain Banks, David Foster Wallace, William Vollmann, Martin Millar, Mark Leyner, Kelly Link, etc., etc.

Remember Election Day 2024? Maybe you shouldn't. Maybe you've blocked it out. That's fair, but there was one pleasant surprise that day: a new EP from Wisconsin's Arms Aloft. It took a while to claw out of the darkness in November, then Year End 2024 coverage took over the Scene … Read more

Jeremiah (Small Steps - guitar/vocals) SPB: What song has the best use of whistling? Jeremiah: I feel like the easy answer would be the Bobby McFerrin song "Don't Worry Be Happy". Which is catchy as all get out, but we prefer the road less traveled here in Small Steps. For … Read more

Breathing Heavy Breathing
Thisquietarmyrecords / Broken Spine Productions (2012)

If the droning sounds were not an indication, then certainly the overall sonic motif is definitely all Aidan Baker, at least his solo piece on this split record with his partner Leah Buckeroff; and while Baker is certainly known for his moody reverb drenched droning that offers sweet sounds and hidden melodies, “Heavy Breathing” actually contains quite a bit of … Read more

Closure Axioms
The Miskatonic Sound Lab (2012)

For as prolific as Aidan Baker is (besides his most known musical endeavor Nadja, he is involved in a slew of other projects as well such as Arc and Infinite Light), his solo material seems criminally overlooked by some (which includes my own self in this group); though maybe this is not a case of overlooking so much as potential … Read more
