The Blind Shake

Mike Blaha (The Blind Shake)

SPB: You have now released records on a lot of labels. What do you enjoy about changing affiliation with each release?

Blaha: I think the best part about label Mormonism is discovering the newer or lesser publicized bands on a label. For example, Thee Oh Sees are one of the best bands on the planet, but without being on Castle Face's roster we wouldn't have known and played with an insane band like Running, now one of our favorite bands live and recorded. There are several more examples, but I recommend people go deeper into the catalogs of all the labels we've been on and find out for themselves how much great stuff is right within reach.

Music • July 5, 2015

That's right: this year is already half empty. Or half full. Something like that? Metaphors aside, we at SPB have distilled the best music of the year so far into a delicious glass that you can sniff at delicately, taste a sip and pontificate over whether Faith No More's comeback … Read more

Celebrate Your Worth
Goner (2016)

I’ve covered The Blind Shake for most of their career so far. Over that time it’s been a steady growth often focused on syncopated and rhythmic rock: forceful, punchy, and precise. The kind of rock that you can set your watch to, while still angry and striking a deeper chord. They’ve taken some turns along the way: their collaborations with … Read more

Fly Right EP
Slovenly (2015)

The Blind Shake have honed their sound over the years, always identifiable yet always moving it forward and with a keen difference between records. It’s pretty impressive considering they write 2-3 minute stomp-garage tracks with a big emphasis on beat and hook—a style where repetition and sameness run rampant.Where Fly Right stands out is its variation from that tradition. The … Read more

Swami John & The Blind Shake

Modern Surf Classics
Swami (2015)

When it was announced that John Reis (Night Marchers, Rocket From the Crypt, Hot Snakes) was collaborating with The Blind Shake, it was expected that the combo would pack a punch. When it came out that the collaborative record was to be instrumental surf, even that made some sense—though the instrumental part is a bit surprising. But, as The Blind … Read more

Matthew Brammer (Six Below Zero) SPB: Six Below Zero is both a solo project and you live in Wyoming, so I imagine you have limited live opportunities -- that said, does the project ever play live and does that possibility affect how you approach songwriting?
