Church Girls

Mitchell Layton (Church Girls – guitar)

SPB: What type of guitar do you play and what’s its “origin story”?

Layton: My main guitar has changed a lot over the years depending on what style I’m playing and what I’m using it for, but for most of the Church Girls touring and studio recording I’ve used my Revered Double Agent. It’s a pretty versatile guitar, so I can get a lot of the tones I want without switching to something else. It has a humbucker pickup in the bridge and a p90 in the neck, so that’s a pretty useful combo altogether. On top of that, it has this bass contour switch which is sort of hard to explain. It changes the low end, but it also messes with the output level a bit. It can give a slightly single-coil sound if it’s rolled all the way off.

In terms of an origin story, Mariel had played a Reverend for a couple of years, and whenever I played hers I loved it. She ended up getting endorsed by Reverend, and when we were on a tour we stopped by their shop to do a quick video and check out some gear. I ended up plugging in the Double Agent and instantly loved it. The neck felt perfect, and the pickups gave a clarity that worked perfectly for Church Girls. As soon as I got back from tour I sent Ken an email and the rest is history. I’ve been playing my Double Agent for every Church Girls tour ever since.
