SPB: Where do you get your inspiration from?

Bessel: When beginning a new song, my go-to foundational drone is the Mellotron’s cello. There’s something about this 60-70 year old recorded cello that sets me into motion. I work my way through a new song by intuitively responding to the culmination of sounds, and I’m inspired by how the layered tracks reveal magic connections. I’m fueled by the process, the construction, the peeling away, and also those moments where I have to start all over again.

Esoterically, my inspiration comes from trying to capture the moments, sounds, and images that are somewhere behind us, out of reach. Like waking up from a dream trying to recall the last image you saw, the scenery, or the characters, as these things fade when you enter the waking world. In so many areas of my life, I’m chasing fleeting glimpses of what just occurred; trying to make sense of it in the present, as every passing minute relegates itself into the past.
