Aaron Charles (Falls of Rauros)

SPB: What is your favorite part of the recording process?

Charles: Recording is probably my single favorite part of being a musician. You not only get to hear tangible results of your hard work, but there's also a chance to indulge in some off-the-cuff creativity in the studio. I love the whole experience of recording and the craft that goes into it, but the best part of it is actually spending time with the band, the engineer, and whoever else might be around. We all work jobs and have busy lives of our own, so having the opportunity to block off several days and disappear into the process is wonderful. A lot of the time spent in the studio is waiting while other people are setting up or tracking their parts, so there's an excess of time to hang out, drink coffee, talk about music, and come up with some interesting ideas. When recording away from home, especially, there's a feeling that the world is on pause.

Each year in late May, the 4-day party and noise-rock festival Caterwaul takes over multiple venues in Minneapolis. It’s a stacked lineup this year, to put it mildly, with each night’s headliners FACS, Young Widows, Naw, Pissed Jeans, and Uniform -- and that’s leaving a ton of other great bands … Read more

There has always been a pull in the black metal genre towards a folk interpretation. It is not that far of a leap, and since the first releases in the genre, bands have been crossing borders left and right, be it the early experiments of Ulver, or the big turn of Bathory with Hammerheart and Twilight of the Gods. Agalloch's … Read more
