Paul (Long Relief)
SPB: What inspired the seemingly baseball-ish name?
Paul: I was an enormous nerd about baseball as a kid, and pitching long relief is a weird kind of purgatory for a pitcher to be in. It’s usually either someone who used to be a starter but can’t pitch for that long/well anymore, or someone who’s younger and isn’t ready to have a more important role. I was entering my 30s at the time so maybe I subconsciously identified with that, but mostly I just thought it sounded like a good band name.
I picked it as the name for some solo demos I put up on Bandcamp a few years before we became an actual band. When we all started playing music together we wanted it to be called Nature Boy, but we found out Nature Boys is already a (good) band in Kansas City that’s on Dead Broke, so we landed on this as the next best option.
