Matt Scheuermann (roses)

SPB: Coming into the Philadelphia music scene, what were your expectations (if any) and have those early expectations and perceptions changed over time?

Scheuermann: Every time I'd visit Philly, I was always inspired.  I'd always loved the people here and the music was just so great and diverse. So my expectations were somewhat based in factual experience.

I was excited to become entrenched in the music community. These past months have only further solidified my opinion of the city and people. So many great bands/artists. I'm getting a better grasp of the areas too: how there are different groups of friends/musicians in different neighborhoods of Philly. I feel pleasantly overwhelmed being here and I'm looking forward to meeting more people and experiencing more music and art.

I could name 6 million great bands from this city, but instead I'll end with a timeless quote from limp bizkit's driving force, Fred Durst: "I get silly when I play in Philly."

Caterwaul 2025

Music • May 13, 2025

Each year in late May, the 4-day party and noise-rock festival Caterwaul takes over multiple venues in Minneapolis. It’s a stacked lineup this year, to put it mildly, with each night’s headliners FACS, Young Widows, Naw, Pissed Jeans, and Uniform -- and that’s leaving a ton of other great bands … Read more

Interviews / Don't Quit Your Day Job • May 13, 2025

There are a lot of misconceptions about the life of a musician. Most musicians have day jobs – and not just to pay the bills. Jobs provide new challenges, personal fulfillment and, yes, some rent or gas money. How an artist spends their time by day will influence the creative … Read more

Roses EP
Stereophonodon Records (2015)

After relocating from Cleveland to Philadelphia, singer/songwriter Matthew Scheuermann put together a self-titled three-song EP released on Valentine’s Day 2015 under the name of Roses. Working alongside crisp acoustic guitar strumming, Scheuermann’s voice reminds me a bit of Band of Horses vocalist Ben Bridwell or maybe even Jeff Mangum since he has a tendency to sing in a higher register, … Read more
