Andy Diaz (Safety)

SPB: You break a string onstage during a song. What’s your strategy: attempt a BB King-style replacement while playing?

Diaz: If I break a string in the middle of a song, I simplify the chords until I have the opportunity to grab my backup guitar. For me, having a backup tuned and ready to go saves time, stress, and hassle. You can switch your A guitar with your B guitar in just a few seconds, so you can really minimize the downtime. A luxury, for sure, but a much safer bet than relying on my ability to do anything as cool as BB King replacing his guitar string in stride.

Greetings From the Sunshine State
Jetsam-Flotsam (2021)

Safety are far from a new band, but they’re new me. Heck, Greetings From the Sunshine State even sounds like a debut album title. Anyway, the band has been kicking since the early 2000s – which actually explains a few of the sonic comparisons I’ll make in this review of their new EP and first release since 2015’s released Congratulate … Read more

Beware Of Safety

Leaves/Scars
The Mylene Sheath (2011)

Beware Of Safety are a Post-Rock band. Sounds simple and plain enough. As they do reside in a genre known for aping their forefathers in a near religious way does little for any band that chooses this route. Many of these bands rely on what the first 3 Mogwai albums taught them. Start calm, build with some heavy parts, climax … Read more
