Small Steps

Jeremiah Duncan (Small Steps – guitar/vocals)

SPB: How did Small Steps, the band, come to be?

Duncan: Small Steps started in late 2023 outside Lexington, Kentucky when me (Jeremiah) and Coty -- our drummer -- got together in a crammed office and started writing music. We had an idea of what style of band we were wanting to create and I had several songs already started. We knew there was a need for a punk band in our scene and we wanted it to be us. It sounds cliche, but we just clicked instantly musically and were on the same page. Creating this energy just came naturally. We started reaching out to other musicians to see if anyone would be interested in joining us to round out a complete sound. Our other guitarist Jon came into the picture about a month later and fit like a missing puzzle piece. Having grown up in the hardcore punk scene like myself, our writing styles on guitar were an exact match. I'd think of melodies and he'd compliment them perfectly and vice versa.

We recorded a 4-song EP in December of 2023 even before we had a bass player (I played bass on the recording) just so we could keep pushing and show everyone what we were creating. Jonathan came along and started playing bass at the beginning of 2023 and it rounded out our sound and our energy. 2023 was a big year for us with playing a lot of shows in a short amount of time, small tours, and releasing a full-length vinyl that came out on Blind Rage Records.
