Witt (The Wild)

SPB: Do you embrace the folk/punk genre?

Witt: Sometimes embracing a genre can be very limiting. The amazing thing about the folk/punk world is that there is an incredible amount of freedom to express yourself however you want. Folk/Punk is more than a musical aesthetic to me. It is a community, a mindset, and a loosely defined set of values. There is a lot of diversity in the sound of folk/punk bands. Some bands tend more toward the punk sound and some more towards the folk sound, but I think the most important thing is that we all are kind of working towards the same goals. The music is more of just a rallying point or reason to get together. What happens at the shows and when we share our ideas with each other is the important thing.

I see The Wild as more of a folk-rock band, but the folk/punk community has always embraced and supported us, and I’d like to think we’ve added some sort of positive input to the genre. Scenes and genres get boring when everyone is doing the same thing or striving for the same sound. It’s all of the different voices, sounds, and ideas that really make the folk/punk world unique and that makes it such a beautiful thing. So, we will always embrace the genre, regardless of how our sound changes or how we change as individuals as the band evolves.

Each year in late May, the 4-day party and noise-rock festival Caterwaul takes over multiple venues in Minneapolis. It’s a stacked lineup this year, to put it mildly, with each night’s headliners FACS, Young Widows, Naw, Pissed Jeans, and Uniform -- and that’s leaving a ton of other great bands … Read more

Dreams Are Maps
Asian Man (2013)

Maybe Defiance, Ohio are the height I hold the folk-punk genre to, maybe it’s just that they’re the first such band to really click with me. Regardless, on listening to The Wild’s second full-length, Dreams Are Maps, I find myself making several comparisons. Given the context that’s a good thing. Given the band’s overall sound, well, there are also some … Read more
