Young, Planetary (Trevor Villagrana)

SPB: What is your favorite 1990s artist/band?

Villagrana: If you knew me growing up, or, hell, if you met me five minutes ago, you’d probably guess my answer to this question is Blink-182.

And, honestly, most of the time, you’d be correct.

However, albeit somewhat surprisingly, the first band that came to mind was Third Eye Blind.

Sure, Blink-182 was my first foray into the world of alternative music. And I’d be lying if I said they weren’t incredibly influential to me.

But, there is something truly, truly magical and unique about Third Eye Blind’s first LP.

Funny story, I actually didn’t even really listen to them until I was well into college. Growing up I just always thought they were some schmucky pop rock band on the radio. But, when my friend forced me to listen to their self-titled in my car one night, I was absolutely floored.

Front to back, the album is a masterpiece. To this day, it’s my go to record for super long, super rainy car rides very late at night. The vibe is just outstanding. It’s both nostalgic and familiar, but also still so modern sounding. Like, any of those songs could be on the radio today and I wouldn’t even think twice.

So, yeah, deep down I’m always gonna be some shithead punk rocker that worships Blink. But, you hold up their first LP to Third Eye Blind’s first LP…I may lose some street cred for saying it, but Third Eye Blind takes it. No. Fucking. Contest.
