Toru + Brutalism

Posted in Records on May 3, 2025

France's Toru and Baltimore, MD's Brutalism have teamed up on a collaborative LP of experimental heavy sounds, out on May 2 via Arsenic Solaris.

Toru is an instrumental French trio, while Brutalism is the one-person project from Terence Hannum (Locrian, Holy Circle, Axebreaker).

The project came together naturally, following Toru's second album, Velours Dévorant. The band entered the studio with no particular goals set. The band drew inspiration from Hannum's "Bouquet" sculpture (which is on the cover of Velours Dévorant), and a connection was made.

Side A focuses on minimalist sounds via Toru, while Side B from Brutalism wavers between atmospheric black metal, ambient, shoegaze, and field recordings.
