SPB premiere: "Banana Tree" by The Peawees

Posted in Bands on June 25, 2024

Italian punk 'n' roll band The Peawees return with a new album, One Ride, out on Sept. 6. The release is still roughly six weeks away, but today Scene Point Blank is excited to debut a new single, "Banana Tree," a saucy and swingin' punk rock song with swagger and a big, guitar-driven hook at the chorus.

"Banana Tree" will be part of One Ride, but also as a single, now, paired with b-side "Don't Look Back" (Billy Vera).

"During the pandemic, I was stuck in Tenerife in the Canary Islands. While I was there, I bought a guitar from an Egyptian guy for 30 euros to pass the time, and that's where I wrote most of our new album," Hervé Peroncini (vocals/guitar) says about the new track. "I heard about a criminal who had fled Italy and come to the islands to start a new life -- a plan gone wrong. It was the story that inspired me to write 'Banana Tree.'" Specifically, it's the tale of a convicted felon who started a new life in a banana field before their eventual capture.

Drummer Tommy Gonzalez paints the setting:

We had a lazy day off in Alicante shortly after COVID restrictions had been lifted. We stayed at a cool house with a pool. The house was under construction, and I was drinking a beer on a spare toilet that was sitting in the middle of the garden. Herve called us in to hear a new song, and we started arranging it on the couch. I was tapping the beat on my shoe with my sticks and the guys were playing along unplugged. It was our first try at 'Banana Tree,' but by the time we got to our next sound check, it was all we wanted to play.

The band formed in 1995, playing punk rock heavily influenced by R&B, roots rock, soul, and garage, which give a much deeper palate with the same leather jacket rebellious spirit.
