We've finally come to the last of Dave Hause's EP series. The final EP comes from Side One Dummy and features covers of Flogging Molly's "Whistles the Wind" and Audra Mae's song, "The River." I'm sad to say, this was probably the most boring of the 5 EPs, but the covers save it. The acoustic version of "Resolutions" present on this EP doesn't quite hold up to the album version. "Melanin" retains its electric guitar with Hause by himself giving less of an emotional performance than the album's recording.
For the covers, I was happy to see Hause didn't go with a Chuck Ragan cover. That would have been an easy way out. Audra Mae was unexpected. Hause adds a vibrato to his guitar and a harder vocal performance to counter the fragile tone of the original. Adding a harmonica to Flogging Molly's "Whistles the Wind" was a nice touch. This was another cover in this series that Hause made his own and could be considered better than the original. It was a nice way to bring the series to a close. Good work Dave Hause!
