Life ain’t so easy in the detention home- Dead Boys.

Emerging from the underbelly of Jersey, made up primarily of three brethren. Raised on rock and roll and sipping from the chalice of early punk rock stalwarts like Da Bruddahs from Queens, Hey Ho! and the Pistoleros of Sexual Nature screaming banshees from across from the large pond. Thus forging the Jersey leader like a moth to a bright zapping bug eliminator, exposing Shields to prominent forefathers of Hardcore like the great Canadian troglodytes- D.O.A, SST poster children-waving Black Flags and the forefathers on social commentary the deceased clan of the Kennedys. A nuclear explosion pulsating mushroom cloud went off in Kevin’s head, and when you need to rely on anyone, you turn to….yes, you can't pick them… you have that right.. Blood! As Andy Gibb sang- Blood is Thicker Than Water..oh wait, it was Love. Damn, you Andy Gibb and the brother's sparkly coattails you rode in on. Now we have that firmly established, like handprints planted in cement outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre. More like Lemmy’s rigid digit firmly giving you a big F.U on Sunset Boulevard right smack dab somewhere, maybe in the middle of Hollyweird.

Detention borders on somewhere over the rainbow and through the tunnel of love. Oh pretail, what is this nonsense you spew through the lips of Linda Blair? When the first wave of punk happened, it was destined to become harder, meaner, full of sweating testosterone, angry young individuals pissed and pissing at Mr.World, and rightly so. They fall in between the period of the birth and death of the original punk rockers and early hardcore, before a title or badge deemed it.

Were they a little too early to ride that crest with their New York counterparts, or was it more factual that the New York City scene wasn't overly thrilled about the New Jersey boys invading their turf? Well, they got over it.

So here we have it, much ado about something. Left For Dead Records has graced us with this relic, combining their 1981 debut single with songs off their debut LP release before they exploded into a million pieces and frankly pun intended Left For Dead (shameless record plug)!

Left for Dead Records has once again raised its tattooed knuckles and said take this chump. It's not a bitter pill to swallow. However, I don't condone swallowing any illicit pills, only ones that draw analogies to music. Want to be the coolest kid on the block, you can dice it, you can slice it, you can slay it, and you can play it. Yes, folks, history does repeat itself!

Nightfreak
Big Neck Records (2024)

Semi-feral punk outfit NightFreak are back with a self-titled LP filled with breakneck riffs and 70s metal bombast. The Chicago group haven’t slowed down since 2022’s Speed Trials but they have filled out. NightFreak the album is lousy with warm back beats and melodic guitars; although, hardcore vocals and tight drums still reign supreme. Album opener “Blackout” is dead serious … Read more

I’m pretty sure I became aware of Mike Krol when The Whiffs posted about playing some shows with him. Krol is a bit of an anomaly. Not only is he on Merge and collaborates with Mac Superchunk- a dream scenario imo- but he’s also been elusive of my fan boy attempts at cold dm’ing him about stuff even tho we … Read more

I get a lot of music here at SPB and, unfortunately, my memory isn’t perfect. But I consider it a good sign when my first thought on hearing a new release is that, “Hey, I need to go back and relisten to the last one again.” It’s not a slight about the old stuff at all, but it means they’ve … Read more
