Enforcers are a band out of Montreal. While the city has a long history of technical metal many forget about the hardcore scene that had been birthed there. The most notable bands include names such as A Death For Every Sin and Final Word. While these bands had their time and seemed overlooked by many, the members of the aforementioned bands are back in a new band.

How do Enforcers compare to their past one may ask? Well it is rather hard to say really.Being a fan of their past endeavors it makes it hard to say that they are definitively better or worse. What can be said is that Enforcers take the what was great about those 3 bands and makes them into something more than just a mix of those sounds. The press release for the record name checks the band as being a mix of "Best Wishes" era Cro-Mags and "Kill Them All" era Metallica. With names like that it may be hard to believe but, Enforcers more than stack up. While the band isn't truly breaking any new ground there is a strong focus on being heavy hardcore while incorporating smart solos that show their musical chops.

Everything on this release is done in an intelligent way as one could assume the members past missteps seem to have informed their direction and the final outcome of this record. The main complaint is that it is far shorter than it probably should be. The songs themselves are not particularly short by hardcore standards and certainly don't feel too short the record being 6 songs one gets the idea that the band just wanted to get something out sooner than later.

As far as this reviewer stands Enforcers are a band that deserves to be noticed by anyone into hardcore. This is not for the new school melodic sing song hardcore fan this is for the fans that remember when hardcore was heavier and more forceful. This will certainly give those hardcore fans something to enjoy.

Painkiller

The Great God Pan
Tzadik (2025)

Painkiller, the trio of John Zorn, Bill Laswell, and Mick Harris shows no signs of slowing down. The Great God Pan is their third full-length, since their reunion in 2024, and in many ways it is an unexpected offering. In keeping with their interests in the metaphysical realm, Painkiller find inspiration from the famed Arthur Machen horror novella. Here, the … Read more

The Equinox
Tzadik (2025)

Painkiller sees three absolute masters of extreme music join forces. John Zorn of Naked City and a billion other projects, Mick Harris who transcended from Napalm Death drummer to illbient guru with Scorn, and producer extraordinaire Bill Laswell. Their first two records, Guts of a Virgin and Buried Secrets are strange meditations traversing between free-jazz, grindcore and dub. Still hungry … Read more

Dauber

Falling Down
Dromedary Records, Recess (2025)

The lazy approach would be to call Dauber "ex-Screaming Females," but that barely scratches the surface. If I had to pick one band to namedrop a comparison to, it would be labelmates Night Court. They play a familiar style but with a lot of quirks that set it apart from the genre standard-bearers. It's driving and energetic -- more importantly, … Read more
