Most within the hardcore and punk community are likely unaware of the existence of Lie and Wait. Sure, they are a fairly new band, but there are plenty of other bands that have been around just as long as them, or even less time, that have already achieved critical praise. The release of Led Astray is going to make it difficult for those that listen to hardcore to be oblivious to Lie and Wait for much longer.

San Antonio's Lie and Wait launch into action with "The Conqueror." Immediately you're greeted with killer guitar licks supplied by the duo of Zach Brin and Anthony Vela. These chops are meaty and pack a serious punch. "The Crown" follows and is easily the best cut of the EP. The song definitely reminded me of a cross between Ringworm and No Warning; the sing-along/aggressive breakdown that concludes the song is spectacular.

"Do You Want to Live Forever?" and "Apostasy" are equally as visceral. "A Fool's Prayer" is another standout number with its crunching riffs, thundering basslines, and pummeling drums. Vocally, Tyler Lutz has a gruff yell, which matches the muddy tone of the music perfectly. Lyrically, Lutz walks a fine line between reality and storytelling. Take this excerpt from "The Conqueror:

Delusions / Of victory / Still standing / Blood pours into the sea / Delusional / This man must be / To fight against a demon / And expect victory.

Led Astray wraps up with "The Horde." In fitting fashion Lie and Wait deliver another stellar cut of metallic hardcore, this one even features a well-placed guitar solo midway through.

With the release of Led Astray these Texas boys are going to turn some heads. Lie and Wait is a band on cusp of becoming something big and it's only a matter of time before they're receiving the attention that they deserve.

Songs of a Lost World
Capitol, Fiction, Lost Music, Polydor/Universal (2024)

It's been sixteen years since The Cure released their last album. I don't know if anyone really knew what to expect, but it's one of the most influential bands in history so expectations were high. The Verdict? Those expectations were met. It'd be silly to say Songs of a Lost World is a "return to form" as the band and … Read more

There are few bands that hit with the mix of raw emotion and musical talent as a live City Mouse show. There are even fewer bands that can capture that live feeling on a record. It’s been a long 7 years since Get Right, but So Far Out keeps it moving as if no time has passed. Of course, the … Read more

Ideally, I would be a bit more interested in art. In visual art- paintings, sketches, MS Paint monstrosities- whatever. I wish I knew more about the meaning of a brush stroke or even had the desire to know more about the meaning of a brush stroke. I spend a lot of time listening to music and, subsequently, I see a … Read more
