If I tell you some band members from bands like Disfear, Dollhouse, Year Of The Goat, Tortyr and The Dontcares started a new band together, what kind of music would you expect to come out? Now, I don’t know every band from that list, but considering the bands I do know I would probably just frown a bit, because they are so far apart sound wise. The chance I would have guessed this would result in a 90’s style indie rock band would be very slim.
Yet this is exactly what we got. The spirit of Dinosaur Jr. is strong on this EP. There is loads of fuzz, there is a poppy songwriting sensibility, it is catchy and heartfelt. The bio talks about a Husker Dü influence as well. I was reminded more of ESC Life, but considering their main influence that’s not a crazy thought.
Sweet Teeth is slightly faster and more punky than the bands mentioned. I can hear a sense of thunderous force that is held back. There is also a sense of longing for something more, a bit melancholic. This combination gives this EP a somewhat bittersweet vibe that is pretty cool. After spinning the EP a lot of times I feel the songs blend together a bit. It is a solid release without any fillers, but also without any hits. I look forward to more material from this band as it sounds really promising. It just needs that little push forward to make it stand out.
