What band did you discover in 2010 (can be a brand new band or an older band) that had an impact on your life? What made them significant?
The Loved Ones went to Australia for the first time this year, and I'm answering this question from Australia now, where I'm touring solo opening for Hot Water Music and The Bouncing Souls, so I've been down under twice in the same year. I dusted off Midnight Oil's Blue Sky Mining for both trips and fell back in love with that record. It's fantastic to my ears. The songs are really well written musically and I love the lyrics, it's for sure going to influence the next Loved Ones, especially lyrically.
How will you remember 2010? (In terms of music)
For me, it was the Arcade Fire. I love that record so much and finally got around to seeing them this year, at an amphitheater with my wife. She leaned over after 4 songs and said "I suppose this is your new favorite shit, eh?", and she was right.
With more and more bands switching to digital methods of releasing music and communicating with audiences in 2010, do you think there's still a place for physical CDs and word-of-mouth shows in the future?
I don't know what the future of the cd is, seems to be on it's way out. Word of mouth though shows, however, will always be the way. You gotta mean something to one person at a time, and when people care, they tell their friends.
What can we look forward to from you in 2011?
2011 is shaping up to busy. I'm releasing my record in January and doing some solo touring, and then we're hoping to drop the new Loved Ones record in the summer, at which point we'll tour the world on it.
What three records are you looking forward to most in 2011?
The 3 records I'm most looking forward to are the new Bright Eyes, the new Hot Water Music and the Jay Z/Kanye collaboration. Oh, and the next Loved Ones.
