SPB Premiere - "Strange Times" by The Tin Can Collective

Posted in Records on June 22, 2021

Since 2011, Long Island, New York-based The Tin Can Collective has been pumping out folk-tinged punk rock with an emotional edge and a finger on the pulse of society (check out their 2020 track “Complicit” for proof). The band, built around John Warren and his sister, guitarist and co-songwriter Jess, is now preparing for the release of their fourth album, Axiomatic Alarm Clock, which is out July 16th.

Premiering here, we’ve got album track “Strange Times” about which John Warren has this to say:

“"Strange Times" encapsulates a lot of the central themes of the album. Existential dread , loathing of the corporate world, trying to function in society while masking depression and anxiety. At times it felt like I was living someone else’s life, going through the motions in a world that let me down. There were a lot of demons I squared off with on this album. This song is about facing them head on. If you only expect the worst, that’s exactly what you’re going to get."

And about the new album, Warren says this:

"Axiomatic Alarm Clock loosely chronicles a week in my life. It starts with Sunday night, staring off my porch, listening to the neighbor’s dog bark his head off outside. I would let the dread of the upcoming week consume me. It ends with "Nothing Gold," where the cycle is broken by an untimely death.

I was feeling very stuck at this time in my life. I felt like I was getting pulled in two directions, living a double life. I had one foot in the traditional 9-5 world and the other foot in the touring musician life, and was firmly holding the line - not wanting to give a little on either side.

So while we are here, we must get up and face the day. Turn off the alarm and get out of bed because that’s what living is sometimes, whether we like it or not."

Dig the track below, head over here to pick up the album digitally or on vinyl, and check out the band live at Amityville Music Hall, NYC on Friday, September 24th with support from Gamblers, Tom Moran, and The Belle Curves. More info on the show can be found here.
