SPB: What was your favorite release of your label in 2006 (including anything that will be released by the end of the year)? Why?
To name a favorite is kind of difficult thing to do as I really enjoy both albums I released this past year. But if I had to choose an album that I am most proud of, it would be the Changing Face EP as it was the first release for the label that come to fruition. So in a sense, it is the realization of a dream to run a record label.
SPB: How will you remember 2006?
This year was a great year for music of all genres. Its kind of funny, because as the year unfolds, so many individuals complain, "Nothing good has come out." Meanwhile, I feel as though I just cant seem to keep up with all the quality releases being put out during the year. So either Im easy to please or theyre too damn difficult. Im leaning towards the latter.
SPB: What do you see as the role of labels in 2007 and beyond?
I can see the major label market taking a hit in sales in the future as digital only releases and digital sales continue to increase. On the other hand, I think the independent spirit will be just as prominent in 2007 as it has been in the past. The DIY ethics of hardcore, punk, and true indie music will continue to prosper even with the bastardization of those genres in the major market world of music. Records labels that endorse the indie mentality will always exist.
SPB: Top five releases of 2006?
Ill do a top five smaller releases I think people should check out:
- Steel Trap â?? Cold.Dead.Broke. (This Blessing, This Curse Recordings)
- Set it Straight â?? Live Your Heart and Never Follow (Twelve Gauge Records)
- The Break In â?? Unbowed (Surprise Attack Records)
- Dance Floor Justice â?? Breaking the Silence (Double or Nothing Records)
- Fireworks â?? We are Everywhere (Run for Cover Records)
SPB: Any previews/hints/facts of what you will be releasing in 2007?
2007 should be a good year for us. Weve got the Integrity tribute album finally coming out in January. Im quite proud of how it turned out and cant wait to share that with everyone. Hopefully it turns some people onto some new bands, and some new people onto Integrity. On the other side of things, Im toying with a few ideas on other releases, but nothing substantial just yet.
SPB: Whats your main goal of 2007?
To continue releasing material from bands that deserve to be heard, no matter the genre. Good music is good music.
SPB: Predictions of trends in 2007?
Who knows what will be popular in 2007 â?? nobody really. Trends come and go. My advice is to be your own person and like what you like.
