Joey (Old Man Markley)
What are your top five albums that were released in 2010? (In order 1-5)
- Against Me! White Crosses
- Off With Their Heads In Desolation
- Fitz and the Tantrums Breaking the Chains of Love
- Swingin Utters Brand New Lungs EP
- New Pornographers Together
What band did you discover in 2010 (can be a brand new band or an older band) that had an impact on your life? What made them significant?
I discovered the Fitz and the Tantrums when my girlfriend hijacked my ipod and loaded it with a bunch of stuff she thought I would like. To my surprise I was smitten by the unpretentious 60’s throwback soul FATT wield with ease. The arrangements are killer, great lyrics and they put on one hell of a show.
How will you remember 2010? (In terms of music)
2010 was the year Epitaph Records signed Off With Their Heads and Weezer, and Ron Artest’s contribution of the epic anthem “Champions.”
With more and more bands switching to digital methods of releasing music and communicating with audiences in 2010, do you think there's still a place for physical CDs and word-of-mouth shows in the future?
I think the digital revolution has made touring more urgent and expanded the idea of releasing albums and other related material. I think CDs could stick around a bit longer as long as the artist gives the fan more of an incentive, like when the Bronx El Mariachi included cologne along with a CD. Word-of-mouth shows are tough with facebook, but would facebook count for word of mouth, or is it more like finger-to-network, and really what’s the fucking difference?
What can we look forward to from you in 2011?
Lots of touring in support of Old Man Markley’s Guts N’ Teeth. Punk Rock Bowling antics. Piano sing-a-longs in strange places.
What three records are you looking forward to most in 2011?
- Cobra Skulls Bringing the War Home
- Bouncing Souls/Hot Water Music split
- ….And unabashedly Old Man Markley Guts N’ Teeth for shameless self-promotion's sake!
